ASWs Must Complete 3 Hours of Law & Ethics CE Every Renewal Period
Effective January 1, 2023, all registered Associates, including ASWs, must complete a minimum of 3 hours of continuing education in California law and ethics during each renewal period, before renewing their registration, to be eligible to renew. It is not a one-time course: the requirement resets with every renewal period for as long as you hold the registration.

Renewing on time matters beyond CE compliance. An ASW registration is valid for a six-year period with five renewals, and every renewal keeps you inside the window your 3,000 hours must fit into. Put it on the calendar the day you renew
The cheapest time to schedule next year's 3-hour course is the day this year's renewal clears. A one-hour-costs-nothing reminder 60 days before expiration prevents the scramble that causes lapses.
Until You Pass It, the Law & Ethics Exam Is Annual
The BBS requires the California Law and Ethics Exam to be taken annually to renew an ASW registration until you pass it. Taking it and failing still satisfies that year's renewal condition; refusing to sit for it does not. Once you pass, the exam obligation is done for good, and passing is also a prerequisite if you ever need a subsequent ASW registration after the six-year window.

The classic miss: an ASW passes the exam in year one, then assumes renewal is automatic in year three and skips the CE. The exam is done forever; the 3-hour CE never is.
When the CE Must Be Completed
All CE must be completed during your renewal period, the one-year period prior to your expiration date, and it must be done before you submit the renewal application, because the application has you certify completion. Renewing first and taking the course afterward is not an option.
A course may be credited to only one renewal period. Hours do not bank or roll forward, and the same certificate cannot serve two renewals. Course-credit math, if you take university coursework instead of a CE seminar: 1 hour of instruction equals 1 CE hour, 1 semester unit equals 15 CE hours, and 1 quarter unit equals 10 CE hours.
What Counts: Acceptable CE Providers and Formats
The Board does not pre-approve specific CE courses. What it accepts is a set of provider types:
- An accredited school, college, or university meeting Business and Professions Code §4996.22 (the ASW-relevant section);
- A school approved by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education;
- A Board-recognized approval agency (Title 16 CCR §1887.4.1(a));
- A provider approved by a Board-recognized approval agency; or
- An organization recognized by the Board (Title 16 CCR §1887.4.3(a)(3)).
Courses designed for non-practitioners are not acceptable. Online, teleconference, and video formats are all fine, so a live in-person class is never required. If you hold two BBS registrations, the same CE hours may apply to both only when the subject matter relates to both scopes of practice.
"BBS-approved course" is a marketing phrase, not a Board status. The Board approves provider categories, not courses. Before paying, confirm the provider fits one of the categories above and the course is genuinely California law and ethics content.
Keep Records, and Never Let the Registration Lapse
The Board may audit your CE records. If selected, you are notified in writing and must produce documentation. Providers do not send certificates to the Board, so the proof burden is yours; if a certificate goes missing, request a replacement from the provider. Failure to comply with CE requirements can mean a citation and fine and/or disciplinary action.
For an ASW, though, the biggest renewal stake is not the audit. It is your hours. Supervised experience counts only while your registration is current, so a gap between expiration and renewal converts every affected week into time that cannot appear on your ASW Weekly Log. Two lapsed months in a two-year journey is an 8% detour, at a stage of your career when time is the scarcest resource you have.

A Note on LCSW (Licensed) Renewal
Once you are a licensed LCSW, the continuing-education picture changes: licensed clinicians carry a different CE obligation than registered associates, on a different cycle. The 3-hour registrant rule on this page stops applying and the licensed requirements take over.
