Built for the Three BHEC Tracks
HourJourney tracks supervised hours for the three pre-license credentials that lead to psychotherapy or counseling licensure in Texas, all three regulated under the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC):
- LPC Associate working toward LPC, under the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors. See what an LPC Associate is.
- LMFT Associate working toward LMFT, under the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists.
- LMSW under a Clinical Supervision Plan working toward LCSW, under the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners.
The LMSW track has a structural quirk worth knowing before you set anything up: an LMSW is a full, renewable practice license, not an associate registration. The pre-LCSW status is an LMSW who has filed a Clinical Supervision Plan with an LCSW-S, not a separate license type. HourJourney tracks the plan hours the same way regardless of that distinction.
What HourJourney Tracks for You
Every feature here maps to a rule that actually exists in Chapters 681, 801, or 781 of the Texas Administrative Code, not a generic hour log.
| Texas Rule | HourJourney Feature |
|---|---|
| Monthly supervision totals, not a weekly formula | Supervision hours roll up by calendar month per supervisor, matching how LPC, LMFT, and LMSW rules are written |
| 50% group supervision cap for LPC Associates (681.92(e)) | Individual and group supervision are logged separately, with a live check against the 50% ceiling |
| 750-hour technology-assisted cap for LMFT Associates (801.142(1)(A)) | Virtual-practice direct hours are tracked as their own running total against the 750-hour limit |
| 10-hours-per-month supervision cap for LMSWs (781.403(b)(8)) | Supervision entries are checked against the monthly cap before they count toward the 100-hour total |
| 18-month, two-year, and 24-month duration floors | A calendar-month counter runs from your license or plan start date so you always know where the duration floor stands |
| Every board form is filed one supervisor at a time | Hours, months, and supervision totals are kept per supervisor, and generate the Supervised Experience Documentation Form, the Supervised Experience Verification Form, or the Clinical Supervision Verification Form |
| 60-month license window for LPC and LMFT Associates (681.91(g), 801.202(a)-(b)) | Your dashboard shows a projected completion date against the 60-month expiration so you can see if your pace is on track |
HourJourney generates each board's form from your logged hours, one per supervisor. LPC Associates get the Supervised Experience Documentation Form (rev 5/4/2026) plus the optional Supervision Hours Log. LMFT Associates get the Supervised Experience Verification Form (rev 8/26/2026), with a separate form for any break in supervision longer than 30 days. On the LCSW track the Clinical Supervision Verification Form (9/25/2025) is a Word document, so HourJourney produces a PDF carrying the same information, which 22 TAC 781.405(a) allows. Initials, the recommendation and the signatures are always left blank for the people who sign them.
What the Boards Actually Require
The three tracks share a 3,000-hour total but differ on almost everything else: direct minimums, specialty hours, duration, and how supervision is counted. See Texas LPC supervision requirements for the full detail on the LPC track.
| Dimension | LPC Associate | LMFT Associate | LMSW to LCSW |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total hours | 3,000 (681.92(a)) | 3,000 (801.142(1)) | 3,000 (781.401(a)(1)(C)) |
| Direct minimum | 1,500 (681.92(b)) | 1,500 (801.142(1)) | Not split, all counted as clinical experience (781.401(a)(1)(C), verification form) |
| Specialty minimum | None | 500 hours with couples or families, part of the direct hours (801.142(1)(B)) | None |
| Minimum duration | 18 months (681.92(c)) | Two years (801.142(1)) | 24 full months (781.401(a)(1)(C), 781.403(b)(7)) |
| Supervision | 4 hours per month, at most 50% group (681.92(e)) | 200 hours total with at least 100 individual, and at least one hour every week while providing services (801.142(3)) | 100 hours total, no more than 10 counted in any one month or 30-day period (781.401(a)(1)(D), 781.403(b)(8)) |
| Eligible supervisor | LPC-S only | LMFT-S only | LCSW-S only |
| Concurrent supervisors | No more than two (681.91(e)) | No more than two unless pre-approved (801.142(8)) | No limit (Supervision FAQ) |

FAQ: Tracking Supervised Hours in Texas
How do I track supervised hours in Texas?+
Log your direct and indirect hours by week and record each supervision session against the supervisor who gave it. Texas duration floors run in calendar months, not weeks, so HourJourney counts months of supervision under each supervisor separately, the way the LPC, LMFT, and LCSW board forms ask for it.
How many hours do I need for LPC in Texas?+
An LPC Associate needs 3,000 total supervised clock-hours, with at least 1,500 direct client contact hours, over a minimum of 18 months (22 TAC 681.92(a)-(c)). There is no separate specialty hour requirement on this track.
How many hours do I need for LCSW in Texas?+
An LMSW on a Clinical Supervision Plan needs 3,000 hours of supervised professional clinical experience over at least 24 full months (22 TAC 781.401(a)(1)(C)). The rule does not split direct from indirect hours; everything counted is clinical experience.
How many supervision hours does BHEC require?+
It depends on the track. LPC Associates need 4 hours of supervision per month, with no more than half in group format (681.92(e)). LMFT Associates need 200 supervision hours total, with at least 100 individual (801.142(3)). LMSWs need 100 supervision hours total, with no more than 10 counted in any one month (781.403(b)(8)).
Does Texas have a weekly hour cap?+
No. None of the three tracks BHEC oversees, LPC Associate, LMFT Associate, or LMSW toward LCSW, sets a maximum number of hours you can work or count in a single week. Texas measures supervision by monthly rate or by a total across the whole experience period instead.
Can I track hours for more than one supervisor?+
Yes. LPC Associates and LMFT Associates may have up to two Council-approved supervisors at a time (681.91(e); 801.142(8)). LMSWs on a Clinical Supervision Plan face no stated limit. HourJourney keeps a running total for each supervisor separately, since every Texas board form is filed one supervisor at a time.
Is there a free way to track counseling hours?+
HourJourney offers a 30-day free trial with no credit card required. You can log direct hours, indirect hours, and supervision by supervisor from day one and see your progress toward the Texas LPC, LMFT, or LCSW hour requirements.
