How many hours do you need for LMFT licensure in Texas?
3,000 hours of supervised clinical practice over at least two years, of which at least 1,500 must be direct clinical services and at least 500 of those direct hours must be with couples or families (22 TAC 801.142(1)). The remainder can be indirect hours such as workshops, case notes and consulting with referral sources (801.142(2)).
How many supervision hours does a Texas LMFT Associate need?
At least 200 hours of supervision by an LMFT Supervisor, and at least 100 of those must be individual supervision (22 TAC 801.142(3)). You need a minimum of one hour of supervision every week you provide services, except for good cause (801.142(3)(A)). A supervision hour is at least 50 minutes (801.2(26)). Up to 100 graduate internship supervision hours can count toward the 200 (801.142(3)(C)).
How long does it take to finish LMFT hours in Texas?
The floor is two years of work experience, however fast you log hours (22 TAC 801.142(1)). At one supervision hour a week, the 200 supervision hours alone take close to four years, so most associates schedule more than the weekly minimum. The LMFT Associate license expires 60 months after it is issued (801.202(a)).
Do telehealth hours count toward Texas LMFT hours?
Yes, up to a limit. No more than 750 of your direct clinical hours may be technology-assisted services, as approved by your supervisor (22 TAC 801.142(1)(A)). The Supervised Experience Verification form reports them as virtual-practice direct hours. This calculator does not apply the 750 cap, so keep your virtual hours under it.
What counts as couples or families hours for a Texas LMFT Associate?
Therapy with two or more people in the same session, or with two or more people from the same family system, who share an ongoing relationship beyond the therapy itself (22 TAC 801.2(8)). At least 500 of your 1,500 direct hours must be of this kind.
Do practicum or internship hours count toward the 3,000 in Texas?
Usually not. Practicum is a degree requirement. The exception is for applicants who began their graduate program before September 1, 2025: staff may count excess internship hours, up to 500 (250 with couples or families) from a COAMFTE program or up to 400 (200 with couples or families) from a non-COAMFTE program (22 TAC 801.142(4)).
Who can supervise a Texas LMFT Associate?
Only an LMFT Supervisor (LMFT-S) (22 TAC 801.143(a)). You can have no more than two supervisors at a time unless the council approves it in advance (801.142(8)), and you must submit a Supervisory Agreement Form within 30 days of starting supervision with any LMFT supervisor (801.142(7)).
