LMSW First, Then a Supervision Plan, Then LCSW
The path runs MSW, then LMSW, then LCSW. The middle step is the LMSW: the Texas LMSW license is a Council license that renews biennially (22 TAC 883.1(a)), not a credential with a 60-month expiration clock. It does not expire after five years the way an LPC Associate or LMFT Associate license does.
There is no separate associate license or associate number on this track. An LMSW who wants to become an LCSW completes a Clinical Supervision Plan with an LCSW-S before the 3,000 hours start (781.402(a)(3); 781.405(a)). The plan, not a license type, is what marks someone as being on the LCSW path.

3,000 Hours, and No Direct/Indirect Split
An LMSW needs 3,000 hours of supervised professional clinical experience before applying for LCSW (22 TAC 781.401(a)(1)(C)). Here is the requirement as one table.

Chapter 781 does not state a direct-hours and indirect-hours split, unlike the LPC and LMFT tracks. The Clinical Supervision Verification Form for LCSW asks for a single clinical-experience total ("Total hours of supervised professional clinical experience worked"), reported separately from supervision hours and months. There is no separate line for face-to-face contact versus paperwork, and no rule in Chapter 781 sets a minimum direct-hours floor the way the LPC and LMFT tracks do.
That single number still has to be clinical social work, defined in rule as applying social work theory, knowledge, methods, ethics and the professional use of self to restore or enhance social, psychosocial or bio-psychosocial functioning (781.102(9)). The 24-Full-Month Floor
Supervision has to extend at least 24 full months, and that floor holds even if the 3,000 hours and the 100 supervision hours are both finished earlier (781.401(a)(1)(C); 781.403(b)(7)). The rule states the floor as 24 full months from the start date of supervision (781.403(b)(7)), not in weeks.
Run the arithmetic and the floor becomes real fast. An LMSW logging a full 40 hours a week reaches 3,000 hours in around 75 weeks, roughly 17 months. That LMSW still has about 7 more months of supervised experience to log, purely to satisfy the calendar requirement, before applying for LCSW. Someone working fewer hours a week may never hit this constraint at all, because their hour count naturally takes longer than 24 months to complete.
Reaching 3,000 hours does not end the process. Supervision has to extend to the 24-month mark, even for an LMSW who finished the hour count months earlier. Set the expected finish date from the start date of supervision plus 24 months (781.403(b)(7)), and compare it against the hour-count projection separately.

The 4-Hours-a-Week Clinical Rule
Hours accrued in non-clinical settings may be used toward the LCSW experience requirement if the applicant works at least 4 hours per week providing clinical social work (781.401(a)(1)(C)).
The Clinical Supervision Plan form makes the same requirement concrete: it states as a condition that at least one practice location must provide the supervisee a minimum of four hours per week of direct clinical practice.
It is worth confirming with a prospective LCSW-S whether a role meets this condition before accepting a job offer, not after the plan is signed.
Supervision, in Summary
An LMSW needs a minimum of 100 hours of supervisory sessions across the 3,000, occurring in proportion to the hours actually worked (781.401(a)(1)(D); 781.403(b)(8)). No more than 10 of those hours may be counted in any single month or 30-day period, (781.403(b)(8)).
A supervision hour runs a minimum of 60 minutes (781.102(50)). Individual supervision is one supervisee at a time (781.102(33)); group runs 2 to 6 (781.102(27)). Both formats can be delivered in person or over HIPAA-compliant audio or video (781.403(b)(4)-(5)). Supervision on the LCSW track is provided by an LCSW with supervisor status, an LCSW-S (781.402(a)(3)), and no limit is stated on how many LCSW-S supervisors an LMSW can work with at once (FAQ).
Run the numbers forward and the 100-hour floor is not hard to clear on a typical schedule: an LMSW working 30 or more hours a week with 1 hour of supervision a week accumulates roughly 104 supervision hours over 24 months, comfortably past the 100-hour minimum.

No Private Practice While Pursuing LCSW
An LMSW planning to apply for LCSW may not own or operate a private clinical practice (781.407(a)). This sits apart from the hour and month requirements, but it is a real constraint on how someone can structure their work during the 24 months: a solo private practice is off the table until the LCSW is in hand.
This restriction applies to ownership and operation, not employment. An LMSW can work as an employee inside a group practice while pursuing LCSW. The rule blocks owning or operating the practice itself, not working clinically under someone else's.

The documentation with the application must include the names and contact information of all supervisors, the beginning and ending dates of supervision, a job description, and the average number of hours of social work activity per week (781.405(b)(1)). The experience must have written evaluations to demonstrate satisfactory performance (781.405(b)(2)), and the applicant keeps and, on request, provides employment status, pay vouchers or supervisory evaluations (781.405(b)(3)). What Never Counts Toward the 3,000
Field placement is a requirement of the MSW degree; Chapter 781 does not state any credit for it toward the LCSW hours (781.401(a)(1)(B)). Supervised experience accrues under a supervision plan signed by the LMSW and the LCSW-S (781.405(a)).
Hours logged while either party's license is revoked, suspended, delinquent or expired are not accepted unless separately approved (781.403(g)). A gap in either the LMSW's or the LCSW-S's status quietly voids the hours logged during it.
One route skips the hour count entirely: an applicant who held a substantially equivalent license in good standing in another jurisdiction for the year immediately before applying can have the Texas experience requirement deemed met through that out-of-state equivalence (781.401(a)(1)(D)).
Common Mistakes on the LCSW Track
These are avoidable errors in LMSW hour records, each preventable with tracking that starts the day the plan is signed.
Assuming a direct/indirect split applies
It does not on this track. The verification form asks for one combined number of clinical experience hours, not separate direct and indirect totals.
Stopping supervision once 3,000 hours are logged
The 24-full-month floor keeps running even after the hours and the 100 supervision hours are done. An LMSW who stops early has to pick supervision back up before applying.
Missing the 4-hours-a-week clinical minimum

Front-loading supervision to finish the 100 hours faster
