The 3,000-Hour Requirement at a Glance
An LMFT Associate needs 3,000 hours of supervised clinical practice, with at least 1,500 of those hours direct clinical services, over a minimum of two years (22 TAC 801.142(1)). Inside that direct-hours floor sit two rules: at least 500 hours have to be with couples or families, and no more than 750 may be delivered through virtual practice. Both numbers apply within the same 1,500-hour bucket, not on top of it.
Experience counts from the date the LMFT Associate license was issued or, for a later supervisor, the date BHEC staff approved that supervisory relationship (Supervised Experience Verification Form, Section IV). The Supervisory Agreement Form (SAF) states: "Experience accrued without an approved SAF on file will not be accepted." Two narrow provisions credit earlier degree-program work: 801.142(4) and 801.142(9), covered below.
One title rule to get right from the start: your license is the LMFT Associate, and per the SAF, other terms like "LMFT A" may not be used. The LMFT Associate Hours Breakdown

Indirect hours are the remaining hours, which may come from related experiences such as workshops, public relations, writing case notes, and consulting with referral sources; the rule does not state a cap for them, and they fill whatever remains once the direct floor is satisfied (801.142(2)).

The 500-Hour Couples and Families Minimum
At least 500 of your 1,500 direct clinical hours must be with couples or families (22 TAC 801.142(1)(B)). Rule 801.2(8) defines the category with precision: "Professional services provided to couples or families in which a clinician delivers therapeutic services with two or more individuals simultaneously or two or more individuals from the same family system within the same therapeutic session. Individuals must share an ongoing relationship beyond that which occurs in the therapeutic experience itself."
That last sentence matters for caseload planning. The relationship must extend beyond the therapy session itself; the rule's examples include family systems, couple systems, enduring friendship or community support systems, and residential, treatment or situationally connected systems (801.2(8)). A group of people with no such tie does not qualify.
The 500 hours are a floor inside the 1,500 direct hours, not an addition to them. An Associate who logs 1,500 direct hours with only 300 of them couples or families has not met the direct-hours requirement, even though the overall total looks complete.
Track couples/family hours separately from your first logged week. The Supervised Experience Verification form asks for the total direct hours plus direct-to-couples/families, direct-to-individuals, and direct-to-groups as separate numbers. Reconstructing that split from months of undifferentiated notes after the fact is a slow, error-prone way to find out you are short.
The 750-Hour Virtual Practice Cap
No more than 750 of your direct clinical hours may be technology-assisted, and your supervisor has to approve them as such (22 TAC 801.142(1)(A)). Rule 801.2(28) defines technology-assisted services as therapy or supervision delivered by electronic communication between locations, and the Supervised Experience Verification form labels this category virtual practice.
Run the arithmetic against the 1,500-hour direct floor and the cap becomes concrete: the ceiling is 750 hours, half of that minimum. An Associate building a fully virtual practice will hit 750 hours of virtual practice well before reaching 1,500 direct hours, and every direct hour after that has to come from in-person work.

Supervision: The 200/100 Split
The LMFT track sets supervision as a running total, not a monthly rate: a minimum of 200 hours by an LMFT-S over the 3,000, with at least 100 of those hours individual (22 TAC 801.142(3)). That is a genuine structural contrast with the Texas LPC track, which sets a monthly rate of supervision and does not state a total; see Texas LPC supervision requirements for the LPC rule.

The weekly frequency rule has no equivalent on the LPC track, where supervision is measured monthly rather than weekly. The rule allows a missed week only for good cause shown (801.142(3)(A)); ask your supervisor how they record it.

Practicum Hours and the Legacy Exception
Practicum is documented on the Supervised Clinical Practicum Form, and it sits outside the 3,000-hour count for most Associates. Experience completed after the master's degree is conferred, as part of a doctoral program, may count toward the requirements of 801.142, but only if the doctoral program leads to a degree that qualifies under 801.112 and 801.113 (801.142(9)).
A second provision is narrow and dated. For applicants who began their graduate program before September 1, 2025, staff may credit excess internship hours toward the 3,000: up to 500 hours (up to 250 of them couples or family) from a COAMFTE-accredited program, or up to 400 hours (up to 200 couples or family) from a non-COAMFTE program (801.142(4)).
The September 1, 2025 cutoff is about when your graduate program started, not when you graduated or when your license issued. An applicant who began their program on or after that date has no excess-internship credit available under this rule, regardless of how many supervised internship hours their program required.
Eligible Supervisors and the Supervisory Agreement Form
Only an LMFT-S can supervise an LMFT Associate's hours. To hold that status, an LMFT needs at least 3,000 hours of LMFT practice accrued over at least three years, plus completion of a supervision course (22 TAC 801.143(a)). An Associate may have no more than two Council-approved supervisors at one time unless given prior approval by the council or its designee (801.142(8)).
Every supervisor relationship needs a Supervisory Agreement Form (SAF) on file within 30 days of initiating supervision (801.142(7)). Two relationship rules govern who can serve: the supervisor may not be employed by the Associate, and the two may not be related within the second degree of affinity or the third degree of consanguinity (801.143(b)-(c)).
Read the employment direction carefully, because it is easy to invert. The rule bars the supervisor being your employee; it does not address a supervisor who is your employer or manager. And hours accumulated after the date a supervisor's license status changed from "active", or after removal of the supervisor designation, will not count unless approved by the council (801.143(i)).
The 60-Month License Window and Documenting the Hours
The LMFT Associate license expires 60 months from its date of issuance, and an Associate who has not completed the hours by then has to reapply (22 TAC 801.202(a)-(b)).
BHEC verifies your experience through the Supervised Experience Verification form (SEV), one per supervisor. If there is a break of more than 30 days in your accrual of supervised experience under the same supervisor, the supervisor completes a separate SEV with its own start and end dates. Each SEV reports supervision hours, dates and total months, and the direct-hours split between couples/families, individuals, and groups, so keeping those buckets separate from day one is what makes the form fast to complete when a supervisor relationship ends.

Common Mistakes That Delay LMFT Licensure
These are avoidable errors in LMFT Associate hour records, each preventable with tracking that separates hour categories from the first logged week.
Logging hours before an approved SAF is on file
Experience accrued without an approved Supervisory Agreement Form will not be accepted. That applies to your first supervisor and to every subsequent one.
Treating the 500-hour couples/family minimum as optional
It is a floor inside the 1,500 direct hours, not an extra credit category. Falling short here means the direct-hours requirement is not met even if the overall total looks complete.
Assuming a group of unrelated clients counts as couples or family work
The rule requires an ongoing relationship between the individuals that exists outside the therapy session itself. A group with no tie beyond the session does not qualify.
Building a caseload past 750 virtual practice hours
The technology-assisted cap sits inside the 1,500 direct hours. An Associate who does not track virtual and in-person hours separately can cross it without noticing.
Missing a week of supervision without documenting good cause
The LMFT track requires at least one hour of supervision every week you are providing services, except for good cause shown. The rule allows a missed week only for good cause shown.
Assuming the pre-2025 practicum exception applies to you
It only applies to applicants who began their graduate program before September 1, 2025. Confirm your program start date before counting on excess internship credit.
Continuing to log hours after a supervisor's status lapses
Hours accrued after a supervisor's license status changes from active will not count unless approved by the council (801.143(i)). Verify status on the BHEC Verify a License lookup rather than assuming it is still current.
