How Long Does the BBS Take to Issue Your AMFT Number?

You submitted your AMFT application and now you are refreshing your inbox. The BBS does not publish an average time to issue your number, but 16 CCR 1805.1 sets a maximum of 30 business days, from the date the Board receives your application, to tell you it is complete or deficient. This guide explains what can affect the wait and how to turn it into a productive prep window.

The Honest Answer

What the BBS Publishes, and What Affects the Wait

Every AMFT applicant wants a number: "It takes X weeks." The BBS does not publish an average time to issue your number. What it does publish is a maximum: under 16 CCR 1805.1, the Board has up to 30 business days, from the date it receives your application, to notify you that it is complete or deficient. Several things can affect the wait, including whether your application is complete and when your fingerprints clear.

Application completeness. This is the part you control. The application includes official transcripts and a Degree Program Certification from your program. When a required document is missing, the BBS cannot finish its review, and the application waits until you send it.

Fingerprint clearance. Your background check has to come back before registration can be finalized. California residents use Live Scan, which is submitted electronically. Out-of-state applicants submit fingerprint hard cards, and hard-card processing takes approximately six to eight weeks, per the BBS.

Board review. You cannot change how long the Board's review takes, but you know its notice deadline (16 CCR 1805.1), and you can check your fingerprint submission at applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov rather than guessing.

Do not plan your start date around a guessed timeline. Because the wait is variable, do not commit to a job start date or give notice at a current position based on an assumed issue date. Confirm your AMFT number is actually issued (on the DCA License Search or your registration certificate) first. Unless the 90-day rule applies, your post-degree hours count only from the date it is issued.

The takeaway: you cannot control the exact date, but you can remove every avoidable cause of delay from your side and use the wait to arrive at day one fully set up. The rest of this guide is about doing exactly that.

The Productive Wait

What to Do While You Wait

The gap between submitting your application and seeing your number is not dead time. It is a good window to line up a supervisor, review the 90-day rule, prepare your supervision agreement, and set up tracking.

1. Understand the 90-day rule before you plan any pre-number work

Hours from your degree award date up to your AMFT number can count if the BBS receives your application within 90 days of your degree award date, the BBS then grants the registration, and, if you graduated on or after January 1, 2020, your workplace required Live Scan fingerprinting before you gained the hours. The hours must also meet all experience and supervision requirements. Otherwise your hours count only from the date your registration is issued.

The 90-day rule can let post-degree hours before your number is issued count. Read the full mechanics in our 90-day registration rule guide and confirm the BBS received your application inside the window.

2. Line up a qualifying supervisor

Not every licensed clinician can supervise you. Your 3,000-hour total includes a 1,750-hour direct clinical counseling minimum (with at least 500 of those hours diagnosing and treating couples, families and children), and up to 1,300 hours can be earned pre-degree, meaning your post-degree minimum is 1,700 hours. Finding a supervisor takes time, so start during the wait.

Confirm your prospective supervisor meets the BBS qualifications, including being licensed long enough to supervise, before you rely on their hours. Our guide on who can supervise an AMFT in California covers the eligible license types in detail.

3. Prepare your supervision agreement

For any supervisory relationship beginning on or after January 1, 2022, the BBS requires a supervision agreement: the supervisor and supervisee must complete it within 60 days of the start of supervision. Draft it now and review it with your supervisor so it is ready when you begin.

See exactly what the document must contain in our BBS supervision agreement guide.

4. Set up your tracking so you can log from day one

The BBS requires you to keep a weekly log signed by your supervisor each week; you keep the logs and send them only if the BBS asks. You need to capture hours accurately from your very first week. Deciding how you will track before your number arrives means no gap, no reconstruction from memory, and no missed direct clinical, couples/families/children, or supervision detail. Get familiar with the official form now.

  • ✓Learn the Weekly Log of Experience Hours (Form 37A-525) column by column before you have to fill your first one.
  • ✓Decide how you will separate direct clinical, the couples/families/children subset, and non-clinical hours from week one, not retroactively.
  • ✓If any pre-degree hours apply, keep them documented separately from post-degree hours so the 1,300-hour pre-degree cap is never in doubt.
  • ✓Set up a system that counts your supervised weeks toward the 104-week minimum as you go, so the count is never in doubt.

Avoid the Delays

How to Submit a Complete Application

Application completeness is the part of the timeline you control, so it is worth checking each item before you submit. Each one you clear removes a possible deficiency notice from your wait.

Item to CheckHow to Prevent It
Missing official transcriptRequest your final transcript early and send it as the BBS Electronic Transcripts instructions describe.
Missing program certificationCoordinate with your MFT program to complete the Degree Program Certification; the transcript does not replace it.
Fingerprint clearance not on fileComplete Live Scan (or submit hard cards early if out of state) so your results are back when your file is reviewed.
Expired Live ScanLive Scan results expire after six months if no application is filed. The BBS recommends completing it no more than 30 days before you submit your application.
Law and Ethics Exam not passed (subsequent registrations)Take the California Law and Ethics Exam before your registration's first expiration date and each renewal cycle until you pass; you must pass it before a subsequent registration can be issued.

Fingerprints, sequenced right. Live Scan results expire after six months if no application is filed, so completing it too early can force a redo. Hard cards take approximately six to eight weeks to process, so out-of-state applicants should submit them as early as possible. The BBS lists a $49 fingerprint processing fee; Live Scan sites may add a rolling fee.

For the fingerprint step specifically, our BBS Live Scan and background check guide walks through the process, and the California Law and Ethics Exam guide explains the renewal requirement for associates.

Day One

What Happens the Day Your Number Arrives

Your hours count from your AMFT registration date, or from your degree award date if the 90-day rule applies. You log BBS supervised experience toward the 1,700-hour post-degree minimum of the 3,000-hour total required for LMFT licensure over a minimum of 104 weeks, with a qualifying supervisor; you and your supervisor complete the supervision agreement within 60 days of starting supervision. Doing the setup during the wait means you can log from your first week.

First, confirm your AMFT number and expiration date on your registration certificate or the DCA License Search. Your AMFT registration is valid for a six-year period (five renewals) and renews yearly. Separately, hours gained more than six years before the BBS receives your licensure application do not count (up to 500 practicum hours are exempt). Then start your first weekly log immediately, capturing direct clinical hours, the couples/families/children subset, and your supervision that same week rather than reconstructing it later.

  • ✓Confirm your AMFT number and expiration date on the DCA License Search or your registration certificate.
  • ✓Confirm your supervision agreement is completed, or on track to be completed within 60 days of starting supervision.
  • ✓Start your first weekly log the same week you begin working.
  • ✓Separate direct clinical, couples/families/children, and non-clinical hours from the very first entry.
  • ✓Confirm each week counts toward your 104-week and 52 individual-or-triadic supervision week minimums.

Our AMFT registration process guide is the natural next step once your number arrives. And when you are ready to see the full renewal picture, the AMFT to LMFT renewal guide lays out what keeps your registration current along the way.

From Day One

Be Ready the Day Your Number Arrives

HourJourney is a purpose-built BBS hours tracking app for California pre-licensed clinicians. Setting it up during your wait means you can log from your first week.

  • ✓Tracks the full 3,000-hour structure: direct clinical, the 500 couples/families/children subset, and non-clinical hours, each against its BBS minimum or cap.
  • ✓Sorts pre-degree and post-degree hours: each week is sorted by your degree date, and your dashboard shows your progress against the 1,300-hour pre-degree cap.
  • ✓Counts your supervised weeks: tracks the 104-week and 52 individual-or-triadic supervision week minimums as separate running totals.
  • ✓Blocks a week over 40 hours: a week's form cannot be saved with more than 40 hours.
  • ✓Exports the Weekly Log of Experience Hours: generates Form 37A-525 as a PDF with signatures left blank for your supervisor.

You can also use the LMFT hours calculator to project your completion date once you begin logging hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take the BBS to issue an AMFT number?
The BBS does not publish an average time to issue your number. 16 CCR 1805.1 sets a maximum of 30 business days, from the date the Board receives your application, to notify you that it is complete or deficient. Several things can affect the wait, including whether your application is complete and when your fingerprints clear. Hard-card fingerprints from outside California take approximately six to eight weeks to process.
What can hold up an AMFT application?
A missing item. The application includes official transcripts and a Degree Program Certification from your program. If a required document is missing, the BBS cannot finish its review until you send it, and 16 CCR 1805.1 gives the Board up to 30 business days to tell you the application is deficient. Submitting a complete package the first time is the part of the timeline you control.
How long do fingerprint results take for the BBS?
It depends on how your prints are submitted. California residents use Live Scan, which is submitted electronically. Out-of-state applicants submit fingerprint hard cards, and hard-card processing takes approximately six to eight weeks, per the BBS. Live Scan results expire after six months if no application is filed, and the BBS recommends completing Live Scan no more than 30 days before you submit your application.
Can I work and earn hours before my AMFT number arrives?
Sometimes, under the 90-day rule.
How do I check the status of my AMFT application?
The Board notifies you if your application is deficient: 16 CCR 1805.1 sets a maximum of 30 business days, from the date it receives your application, to tell you it is complete or deficient. You can check your fingerprint submission at applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov. Once your number is issued, confirm it on the Department of Consumer Affairs License Search or your registration certificate.
What should I do while I wait for my AMFT number?
Treat the wait as a setup window. Line up a qualifying supervisor and draft your supervision agreement, which is required for supervisory relationships beginning on or after January 1, 2022 and must be signed within 60 days of starting. Set up your hour-tracking system so you can log from your first eligible day. Doing this now means the day your number arrives, you start earning countable hours immediately instead of scrambling.
Do I have to take the California Law and Ethics Exam before I get my AMFT number?
Not for your first AMFT registration. Once registered, you must take the California Law and Ethics Exam before your registration's first expiration date and in each renewal cycle until you pass it; renewal requires taking it. You must pass it before a subsequent registration can be issued.
What should I do the day my AMFT number is issued?
Your hours count from your AMFT registration date, or from your degree award date if the 90-day rule applies. You log BBS supervised experience toward the 1,700-hour post-degree minimum of the 3,000-hour total, with a qualifying supervisor; you and your supervisor complete the supervision agreement within 60 days of starting supervision. Confirm your AMFT number and expiration date on your registration certificate or the DCA License Search, then start your first weekly log. The checklist in the Day One section lists what to set up so you can log from week one.
