AMFT Registration in California: How to Apply (2026)

Last Updated: May 2026

Once you graduate from a qualifying MFT program, the next step toward your LMFT license is registering as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. The application has a few specific requirements — Form 37A-301, Live Scan fingerprinting, official transcripts, and a $150 fee — and a strict 90-day deadline that, if missed, costs you weeks of supervised hours. This guide walks through the entire process step by step.

The Basics

What Is AMFT Registration?

An Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) registration is the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) credential that allows recent MFT graduates to begin earning supervised post-degree hours toward an LMFT license. Without it, hours you accrue after graduation do not count.

AMFT registration is not a license. It is a six-year window during which you must complete your 3,000 supervised hours, pass the California Law & Ethics Exam and the Clinical Exam, and apply for full licensure. It must be renewed annually, and the clock starts on the day your registration number is issued.

For a fuller view of where AMFT registration sits in the licensure process, see our step-by-step guide to becoming an MFT in California.

Step 1

Confirm Your Eligibility

Before you submit Form 37A-301, you need to confirm three things:

  • 1.Your degree has been conferred. Walking the stage at graduation is not enough — your degree must be officially awarded. Your transcript will show the conferral date. The 90-day window starts on that exact date.
  • 2.Your program qualifies under the BBS. California MFT programs at BBS-approved institutions automatically qualify. Out-of-state programs require a course-by-course equivalency evaluation and add 2-4 months to processing.
  • 3.Your transcripts are available. The BBS requires official transcripts (sealed and sent directly from the registrar). Most universities can issue them within 1-3 weeks. If they are delayed, request a letter of degree completion from your registrar as a stopgap.

Don't wait for your diploma

You do not need your physical diploma to register. Your transcript with the conferral date is what the BBS uses. Order official transcripts the day your degree is conferred.

Step 2

Complete Form 37A-301

Form 37A-301 is the BBS Application for AMFT Registration. You can submit it electronically through BreEZe (the California Department of Consumer Affairs portal) or mail a paper copy. Electronic submission is faster and recommended.

The form asks for:

  • Your full legal name, contact information, and Social Security Number
  • The institution that conferred your degree, your degree title, and the conferral date
  • Disclosure of any prior professional license discipline, criminal history, or pending charges
  • Live Scan request form (BBS-approved, with the BBS as the requesting agency)
  • $150 application fee, paid by credit card (BreEZe) or check (mail)

Disclose every prior arrest, conviction, or professional discipline matter — even minor or expunged ones. The BBS receives a separate criminal record check from the Department of Justice; mismatches between your disclosure and that report cause weeks of delays and can trigger a denial.

Step 3

Complete Live Scan Fingerprinting

Live Scan is California’s electronic fingerprinting system. It runs your prints through the Department of Justice and FBI databases and forwards the results directly to the BBS. The provider gives you a stamped receipt; you submit that receipt with Form 37A-301.

Find a BBS-approved Live Scan provider through the California Attorney General’s public locator. UPS Stores, public libraries, sheriff’s offices, and dedicated fingerprinting businesses are common providers. Cost is typically $90 to $130: roughly $32 in DOJ + FBI processing fees, plus the provider’s rolling fee.

Bring your Live Scan request form (downloadable from the BBS site), a government- issued photo ID, and payment. Confirm the provider lists the BBS as the requesting agency and uses the BBS application type. Wrong codes mean the prints don’t reach the BBS and you’ll have to redo it.

Two Live Scans, not one

Once you start working as an AMFT, your employer must also Live Scan you before you can earn countable hours at their site. That is separate from your BBS registration Live Scan. Plan for both.

The Deadline

The 90-Day Rule

The BBS must receive your completed AMFT application within 90 calendar days of your degree award date. If they do, post-degree hours you accrue between your graduation and your registration issue date count retroactively (subject to a separate Live Scan from your employer). If they don’t, those hours are permanently lost — there are no extensions.

“Completed” means: signed Form 37A-301, official transcripts, Live Scan receipt, and the $150 fee — all received together. Missing any one piece can stop the clock and cost you the window.

For the full mechanics of the 90-day rule, including what to do if you miss the deadline and how the gap period works, read our complete guide to the BBS 90-day rule.

Apply the same week your transcripts arrive. Do not wait until day 89. The 90-day rule is the single most expensive deadline in the licensure process — every day of delay risks losing days of countable hours.

Step 4

After You Submit

The BBS averages roughly 28 days to process new AMFT applications, but during peak season (May through August, when most graduates apply) it can stretch to 45+ days. Track your application status through your BreEZe account.

While your application is being processed, you can already start gaining countable hours only at exempt settings — community agencies, nonprofits, county behavioral health, and government facilities. You cannot work at a private practice or professional corporation until your AMFT number is in hand.

When your AMFT registration is approved, the BBS issues a registration number and an issue date. From day one, you should start logging hours toward the BBS hour categories — direct (A1 + A2) and non-clinical (B). For the rules around what hours count and how to log them, see our guide to the California LMFT hours requirements and our guide to BBS supervision requirements.

Once You’re Registered

Don’t lose hours to a tracking mistake.

The 3,000-hour grind is hard enough without spreadsheet errors. HourJourney auto-validates BBS supervision ratios as you log, fills Form 37A-525 from your entries, and tracks the A/B/C category caps so you never lose an hour to a paperwork issue. 30-day free trial, no card if you cancel.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does AMFT registration take in California?

The California BBS averages roughly 28 days to process a new AMFT registration application, though processing can stretch to 45+ days during peak season (May through August). Electronic submission through BreEZe is faster than mailing a paper application. The 90-day rule only requires that your application be received within 90 days of your degree award date — processing time beyond that does not affect your hours.

Can I work between graduation and AMFT registration?

Yes, but only at exempt settings (community agencies, nonprofits, government facilities) and only if you submit your AMFT application within 90 days of your degree award date. Your employer must complete a Live Scan on you before you can begin gaining countable hours. You cannot work at a private practice or professional corporation until your AMFT registration number is issued.

What if my transcripts are delayed?

The BBS requires official transcripts showing your degree conferred. If your transcripts are delayed, request a letter of degree completion from your registrar's office and submit it with your application — many graduates use this as a stopgap while official transcripts catch up. The 90-day window is based on your degree award date (already final on your transcript), not on when transcripts arrive at the BBS.

Do I need malpractice insurance before registering as an AMFT?

California does not require AMFTs to carry malpractice insurance, but most agencies and supervisors will require it before you can begin seeing clients. Plan to secure a policy before you start your first post-degree job — independent policies for associates typically cost $200-$400 per year. Some employers cover malpractice as part of W-2 employment, but always confirm in writing.

Is AMFT registration the same as the LMFT license?

No. AMFT is a registration that allows you to gain supervised post-degree hours toward licensure. The LMFT license is granted only after you complete your 3,000 supervised hours, pass the California Law and Ethics Exam and the Clinical Exam, and submit a separate licensure application. AMFT registrations expire after six years and must be renewed annually.

How much does AMFT registration cost in total?

The total upfront cost is approximately $240-$280: the BBS application fee is $150, and Live Scan fingerprinting fees range from $90 to $130 depending on the provider. After registration, you pay a $150 annual renewal fee. There are no fees for the supervision agreement or for changing employers.

Can I register as an AMFT if my degree was earned out of state?

Yes, but the BBS must determine that your out-of-state program is substantially equivalent to a California-approved MFT program. You will need to submit a course-by-course evaluation and a detailed program description with your application. Out-of-state applications take significantly longer to process — plan for 3 to 6 months. Apply as early as possible to avoid losing the 90-day window.

What is the renewal cycle for AMFT registration?

AMFT registrations renew annually on the last day of your birth month. The renewal fee is $150. Your AMFT registration is valid for a maximum of six years — after six years, you must either be licensed or your registration expires permanently and cannot be renewed. Continuing education is not required for AMFTs (unlike licensed therapists), but tracking your supervised hours is.
