Spreadsheet vs. the app

Let's be honest: the spreadsheet is a genuinely useful, free way to start logging hours. For a single supervisor at a single site in your first few months, it's plenty.

What a spreadsheet can't do is check your hours. It won't flag a week where your supervision ratio falls out of compliance, it won't auto-classify your pre-degree vs post-degree hours, and it can't fill out the official BBS forms you submit at the end. That's where HourJourney comes in — it auto-validates BBS supervision ratios and exports the official BBS Experience Verification and Weekly Log forms pre-filled. The spreadsheet can't.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BBS hours spreadsheet really free?
Yes. The spreadsheet is genuinely free — we only ask for your email so we can send occasional BBS hour-tracking tips, and you can unsubscribe anytime. There's no card, no trial, and no obligation to use the HourJourney app.
Which version of the spreadsheet do I need?
Pick the version that matches your license track: LMFT/AMFT (Marriage & Family Therapist), LPCC/APCC (Professional Clinical Counselor), or LCSW/ASW (Clinical Social Worker). Each version uses the correct BBS hour categories and non-clinical caps for that license type. After you download one, you can grab the other two from the download screen.
How do I use the BBS hours spreadsheet?
Add one row per week. Enter your direct clinical hours (A1/A2), non-clinical hours (B), and supervision hours for that week. The spreadsheet keeps running totals so you can see progress toward your required hours. Keep a separate log per supervisor per work setting, as the BBS requires.
What does the HourJourney app add over the spreadsheet?
The spreadsheet records your hours; it doesn't check them. HourJourney auto-validates BBS supervision ratios in real time, auto-classifies pre-degree vs post-degree hours for LMFT trainees, tracks multiple supervisors and sites, and exports the official BBS Experience Verification and Weekly Log forms pre-filled — which a spreadsheet can't do.

HourJourney is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). This spreadsheet is a tracking aid, not legal or licensure advice. Always confirm current requirements directly with the BBS at bbs.ca.gov, as rules can change.
