What Is an RCSWI? Florida's Registered Clinical Social Worker Intern, Explained

RCSWI stands for Registered Clinical Social Worker Intern, the title a social worker holds while completing supervised clinical experience toward an LCSW in Florida. It is a registration, not a license: the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling ("the Board") issues it under s. 491.0045, F.S., and it authorizes supervised practice only. If you are already registered, the day-to-day rules live in Florida registered intern supervision requirements and the 60-month registered intern limit.

The Basics

RCSWI, in Plain Terms

RCSWI expands to Registered Clinical Social Worker Intern. It is a registration under Chapter 491, Florida Statutes, not a license, and it is the credential a social worker registers for after finishing a CSWE-accredited master's degree, before they have completed the supervised experience and exam that lead to an LCSW.

The distinction between "registration" and "license" is not a technicality. A registration authorizes supervised practice for a fixed, nonrenewable term; a license authorizes independent practice with no fixed expiry. An RCSWI cannot practice on their own and cannot hold the credential indefinitely.

Comparison

RCSWI vs. LCSW vs. the Certified Master Social Worker

RCSWI is easy to confuse with two other credentials issued by the same board: the LCSW it leads to, and the Certified Master Social Worker (CMSW), a separate credential that sounds clinical but is not.

A job posting or a business card that says "CMSW" is not a substitute for RCSWI supervised experience, and it does not count toward an LCSW. The two credentials share a board and a rule chapter and nothing else about their clinical scope.

Scope

What an RCSWI May Do

An RCSWI may provide psychotherapy face-to-face with clients, but only under a Board-approved qualified supervisor. A qualified supervisor for this track is an LCSW in good standing (or the equivalent) with at least 4 years of clinical social work experience, of which up to 2 years may have been earned during the supervisor's own post-master's internship, with the remaining 2 or more years post-licensure (64B4-11.007).

In a private practice setting, a licensed mental health professional must be on the premises when an RCSWI provides clinical services; telehealth presence satisfies this if a protocol is on file with the supervisor (s. 491.005(1)(d), F.S.; 64B4-2.002(8)).

An RCSWI cannot practice independently, in private practice or anywhere else. Every hour of clinical experience has to happen under an actively Board-approved supervisor, and hours obtained before that approval is confirmed do not count.

Education

The Education Required to Register

Registering as an RCSWI requires a master's or doctoral degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program (or the Canadian equivalent), including at least 24 semester hours or 32 quarter hours in theory of human behavior and practice methods, with a minimum of one course in psychopathology (s. 491.005(1)(c), F.S.).

A graduate whose program did not emphasize direct clinical services may still register with only 15 semester hours or 22 quarter hours completed, with the remaining coursework due before the Board approves the applicant to sit for the exam (s. 491.005(1)(d), F.S.). That early-registration option lets a graduate start accruing supervised hours sooner rather than waiting on a full course sequence.

Term Limit

The 60-Month, Nonrenewable Term

An RCSWI registration expires 60 months, five years, from its date of issuance, for registrations issued after March 31, 2017, and it cannot be renewed (s. 491.0045(5)-(6), F.S.).

A one-time hardship exception grants a 24-month extension from the original expiration date, but only if the ASWB Clinical exam has already been passed and the education and practicum requirements are complete. It must be requested on Form DH5065-MQA at least 30 days before the registration expires (64B4-3.0085(10)-(11)). The full mechanics, including what happens without an extension, are in the 60-month registered intern limit.

What Comes Next

Becoming an LCSW: The Short Version

An RCSWI becomes an LCSW by completing at least 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy in no less than 100 weeks (64B4-2.001(1)(a)-(b)), at least 100 hours of supervision in the same no-less-than-100-week span, with a minimum of 1 hour of supervision every 2 weeks (64B4-2.002(1)(a)-(c)), and passing the ASWB Clinical exam.

Before full licensure, an RCSWI also completes an 8-hour Laws and Rules course with an 80% passing score (64B4-3.0035(1)-(2)) and a 3-hour HIV/AIDS course (64B4-3.0035(1)(b), (3)). The licensure application itself is Form DH-MQA 1174 (Revised 12/2025), filed with a $175 fee ($100 application plus $75 initial license, 64B4-4.002) and a DH-MQA 1181 the DH-MQA 1181 verification form from every supervisor the applicant worked under.

The full breakdown of hours, supervision mechanics, and the application itself is in Florida LCSW requirements. If you have not yet registered, start with the registered intern application and the $150 filing fee on Form DH-MQA 1175.

Pitfalls

Common Mistakes About the RCSWI Credential

1

Calling RCSWI a license

It is a registration. The distinction matters for scope of practice, insurance credentialing, and how a job posting should describe the role.

2

Treating CMSW as a clinical credential

The Board's own description states a CMSW cannot provide clinical services. It is not an alternate path to psychotherapy practice and does not substitute for RCSWI supervised experience.

3

Assuming the 60-month term can be renewed

It cannot. The only extension is a one-time, 24-month hardship exception, and only if the exam is already passed and coursework is complete.

FAQ

FAQ: What Is an RCSWI?

What does RCSWI stand for?▾

RCSWI stands for Registered Clinical Social Worker Intern. It is the title Florida gives to a social worker who has finished a qualifying master's degree and registered with the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling to accrue supervised clinical experience toward an LCSW (s. 491.0045, F.S.).

Is RCSWI a license?▾

No. RCSWI is a registration, not a license. It authorizes supervised practice only, under a Board-approved qualified supervisor, for a fixed term that cannot be renewed (s. 491.0045(3), (5)-(6), F.S.). The license that follows it, once the supervised experience and exam are complete, is the Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

What is the difference between RCSWI and LCSW?▾

An RCSWI practices under supervision while completing 1,500 hours of face-to-face psychotherapy and 100 hours of supervision, both in no less than 100 weeks (64B4-2.001(1), 64B4-2.002(1)). An LCSW has passed the ASWB Clinical exam, filed the licensure application, and practices independently, with a license that renews biennially instead of expiring after a fixed term (64B4-6.001(1)).

What is the difference between RCSWI and CMSW?▾

RCSWI is a clinical track: the registered intern provides psychotherapy under supervision on the way to an LCSW. The Certified Master Social Worker (CMSW) is a separate, non-clinical credential under the same board; the Board's own description states, 'You cannot provide clinical services with this designation.' CMSW has no supervised-psychotherapy-hours requirement comparable to RCSWI.

How long is an RCSWI registration valid?▾

60 months (5 years) from the date of issuance, for registrations issued after March 31, 2017, and it cannot be renewed (s. 491.0045(5)-(6), F.S.). A one-time hardship extension of 24 months is available if the ASWB Clinical exam has already been passed and the education and practicum requirements are complete, filed on Form DH5065-MQA at least 30 days before expiration (64B4-3.0085(10)-(11)).

What degree do you need to become an RCSWI?▾

A master's or doctoral degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited (or Canadian-equivalent) program, including 24 semester or 32 quarter hours in theory of human behavior and practice methods, with at least one course in psychopathology (s. 491.005(1)(c), F.S.). A person may register with only 15 semester or 22 quarter hours completed if the program did not emphasize direct clinical services, with the rest due before exam approval (s. 491.005(1)(d), F.S.).

How much does it cost to register as an RCSWI?▾

The registration fee is $150, nonrefundable, filed on Form DH-MQA 1175, the Application for Registration as a Registered Intern for Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy or Mental Health Counseling (Revised 5/2025) (64B4-4.015; s. 491.0045(2)(a), F.S.). The application also requires a qualified-supervisor letter and Livescan fingerprints.
