What Is an LMHCA in Washington?

LMHCA is the pre-license credential on Washington's counseling track, held before Washington LMHC requirements are met. This page covers what the title means, what an LMHCA can and cannot do, how the license renews, and how it ends in the LMHC.

The Title

DOH's Title Is "Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate"

Washington's statute names the credential directly: "licensed mental health counselor associate" (RCW 18.225.020). LMHCA is the shorthand practitioners and DOH materials use for that title. It sits alongside seven other protected titles in the same statute, including the full "licensed mental health counselor" (LMHC), and a person may not represent themselves under any of these titles without being licensed by the department (RCW 18.225.020).

The Department of Health (DOH) issues and disciplines the LMHCA directly. A nine-member advisory committee, the "mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and social workers advisory committee," advises the department but does not license anyone (RCW 18.225.010(4), (6), .060, .070).

Who Holds It

Who Holds an LMHCA

An associate is "a prelicensure candidate who is working towards full licensure in their profession, has a graduate degree in a mental health field ... and is gaining the supervision and supervised experience necessary" to become licensed (WAC 246-809-010(1)). To apply, the candidate submits "a declaration that the applicant is working toward full licensure in that category" (RCW 18.225.145(1)).

Washington does not require supervised postgraduate experience before someone becomes an associate: "applicants are not required to have supervised postgraduate experience prior to becoming an associate" (WAC 246-809-230(5)). The graduate degree comes first; the supervised hours accrue after the LMHCA license issues.

Scope

What an LMHCA May and May Not Do

An LMHCA works under supervision while gaining the experience the full license requires. The rule is direct about the limit: associates "may not independently provide ... mental health counseling ... for a fee, monetary or otherwise," and "must work under the supervision of an approved supervisor" (WAC 246-809-010(1); see RCW 18.225.145(2)).

Clients are told directly. At the first professional contact, the LMHCA discloses, on a disclosure form, that they are an associate under the supervision of an approved supervisor (RCW 18.225.145(3); WAC 246-809-710(2)). The supervisor and candidate together are also responsible for communicating "the nature of the supervisory relationship to the public, other professionals, and all clients served" (WAC 246-809-020(2)(a)).

License Term

One Year, Renewed on the Date of Issuance, No Renewal Limit

"An associate license is valid for one year and must be renewed every year on the date of issuance" (WAC 246-809-990(2)). That is the associate's own anniversary, not a birthday: the full LMHC license instead renews yearly on the license holder's birthday (WAC 246-809-990(1)).

There is no cap on how many times an LMHCA can renew: "An associate license may be renewed" (RCW 18.225.145(6)(a)). A six-renewal limit existed before June 6, 2024. Anyone whose license was not renewed because they hit that former limit "shall be treated as if the person's license expired" and can return to active status through the expired-credential process, rather than facing a hard stop (RCW 18.225.145(6)(b)).

No renewal cap exists today. The six-renewal limit is gone as of June 6, 2024 (RCW 18.225.145(6)(b)). Do not plan around a renewal ceiling; none applies now.

Continuing Education

16 CE Hours a Year to Renew

An LMHCA owes 16 hours of continuing education every year, with 6 hours of professional ethics and law every two years, attested at the second, fourth and sixth renewal, plus 2 hours of professional roles and boundaries and 2 hours of health equity every four years (WAC 246-809-632(1) through (4)).

Every Washington associate owes that yearly load. It is separate from the 36 hours, including 6 in professional law and ethics, that must be completed after meeting academic requirements and before DOH issues the full LMHC license (DOH continuing education page; DOH 670-209).

Becoming an LMHC

How the LMHCA Ends: 3,000 Hours, Then the LMHC

An LMHCA becomes an LMHC by completing "a minimum of 36 months full-time counseling or 3,000 hours of postgraduate mental health counseling," with at least 1,200 hours direct counseling with individuals, couples, families or groups, and 100 hours of immediate supervision (WAC 246-809-230(3)(a),(b)).

Every licensure candidate also owes regular supervision "meeting at least one hour for every 80 hours of the licensure candidate's clinical practice time" (WAC 246-809-020(2)(b)). That rate is a minimum frequency, not a substitute total: at 3,000 hours of clinical practice time, the rate alone works out to at least 37.5 supervision hours, which is arithmetic, not a rule, and the 100-hour immediate supervision total still applies on top of it.

Once the hours and supervision are complete, the candidate passes the NCE or NCMHCE, with scores sent directly from the National Board for Certified Counselors (WAC 246-809-240). For the full hours, supervision and exam picture, see Washington LMHC requirements and Washington LMHCA supervision requirements.

The 120-Day Pending Practice Window

Since October 1, 2025, an applicant may practice under a pending associate license for up to 120 days after DOH receives a completed application, working under an approved supervisor; the window "shall not be extended or renewed" (WAC 246-809-097(1),(2),(4); RCW 18.225.145(2)).

For the application itself, including what counts as complete, see the LMHCA application in Washington.

Pitfalls

Common Mistakes About the LMHCA

1

Treating the LMHCA as something less than a license

Washington's statute treats the LMHCA as an associate license: the applicant submits a declaration of working toward full licensure, and the Department of Health issues and renews it as a license, valid one year and renewed on the date of issuance (RCW 18.225.145(1); WAC 246-809-990(2)).

2

Assuming a renewal cap applies

The former six-renewal limit ended June 6, 2024. Today, an associate license may be renewed with no stated limit (RCW 18.225.145(6)(a),(b)).

3

Assuming pre-degree hours count toward the LMHC

The 3,000-hour requirement is postgraduate mental health counseling (WAC 246-809-230(3)(a)); Washington does not require supervised experience before becoming an associate, and it does not credit hours from before the graduate degree either.

FAQ

FAQ: What Is an LMHCA in Washington

What does LMHCA stand for?▾

Washington's statute titles the credential itself: "licensed mental health counselor associate" (RCW 18.225.020). LMHCA is the shorthand for that title, not a separate defined abbreviation. It is the pre-license credential on the path to becoming a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) in Washington.

What is an LMHCA allowed to do?▾

An LMHCA works toward full licensure while gaining supervised experience under an approved supervisor. The associate "may not independently provide ... mental health counseling ... for a fee, monetary or otherwise" and must work under supervision (WAC 246-809-010(1); see RCW 18.225.145(2)). At the first professional contact, the LMHCA discloses to the client, on a disclosure form, that they are an associate under an approved supervisor (RCW 18.225.145(3); WAC 246-809-710(2)).

Is the LMHCA a license, or something less formal?▾

It is a license. The applicant submits "a declaration that the applicant is working toward full licensure in that category" (RCW 18.225.145(1)), and the Department of Health issues and renews it as an associate license, valid for one year and renewed on the date of issuance (WAC 246-809-990(2)).

How long does an LMHCA license last, and how many times can it renew?▾

One year, renewed on the date of issuance (WAC 246-809-990(2)). There is no limit on how many times it can renew (RCW 18.225.145(6)(a)). A six-renewal limit existed before June 6, 2024; anyone cut off by that former limit returns to active status through the expired-credential process rather than a hard stop (RCW 18.225.145(6)(b)).

Do I need supervised hours before I can become an LMHCA?▾

No. Washington does not require supervised postgraduate experience before someone becomes an associate (WAC 246-809-230(5)). The hours requirement applies to moving from LMHCA to LMHC, not to holding the associate license itself.

How does an LMHCA become an LMHC?▾

By completing 36 months full-time counseling or 3,000 hours of postgraduate mental health counseling, including at least 1,200 direct counseling hours and 100 hours of immediate supervision (WAC 246-809-230(3)), then passing the NCE or NCMHCE, with scores sent directly from NBCC (WAC 246-809-240). See Washington LMHC requirements for the full breakdown.

Can an LMHCA see clients before the license is issued?▾

Since October 1, 2025, an applicant may practice under a pending associate license for up to 120 days after the Department of Health receives a completed application, working under an approved supervisor; the window "shall not be extended or renewed" (WAC 246-809-097(1),(2),(4); RCW 18.225.145(2)).
